Use of Beyond Crisis
What is the FILM's purpose and how do I relate it to what my organization does?
Beyond Crisis is designed as a community engagement tool to deepen climate change awareness and promote action. Designed as five interconnected chapters, the film takes an audience through both the science, societal causes, social psychology and barriers to change straight through to questions of social justice and the many exciting opportunities for building engagement towards a more sustainable future. At only 1 hour long, the content can be easily broken up or played in full, to best connect to the focus of your particular group or organization.
The intention of the film is to help bring communities together, to empower local dialogue and increase support for action on climate change. A screening event can be a perfect opportunity to spark this dialogue and build capacity for change in your community – to support this, a comprehensive Film Package is included with every film purchase, providing hosts with the tools they need to host a community dialogue and link Beyond Crisis to local initiatives.

Is the film appropriate for younger audiences?
Beyond Crisis does not portray any physical violence, or include any swearing or sexual content. Hence it is appropriate for both older and younger audiences, depending in part on your audience’s level of maturity and ability to comprehend and consider at times heavy and difficult themes in relation to global climate change. It should be emphasized that people across all age ranges are likely to find some of the film’s content disturbing, since a rapidly changing climate is a disturbing reality for all of us. The fact that the content depicted is a very honest reflection of the changing world we are living in – not fictional – does add to its disturbing nature.
With that said, young people are often well aware of environmental issues (sometimes more so than adults!), and from our experience can have incredible insight into the problems and actions that should be taken. It is younger generations (and generations to come) who will have to face the worst consequences of climate change, and who therefore have a strong stake in advocating for a more sustainable future.
From our experience, students in Grades 7 and higher (middle to high school) are the younger age ranges of audience we’ve successfully screened the film with. Note that for younger and more sensitive audiences, it is possible to play the more solutions-focused chapters only, which focus on the positive opportunities in responding to climate change (such as A Brighter Future and Building a Movement). We encourage any educators to watch the film first prior to screening with their students. A 12-minute preview of the film can be found here.
Beyond Crisis was rated 14A by the Ontario Film Review Board, for the province of Ontario, Canada. According to this review, this means that children who are younger than 14 years old should be accompanied by an adult while watching the film.

HOW CAN I WATCH BEYOND CRISIS?
Beyond Crisis is currently available for purchase by license only, which provides both digital access and the option of a physical USB copy of the film and accompanying materials. Prior to purchase, you can watch a 12-minute preview of the film here. You can also visit our Screenings page to see if there are any upcoming screenings near you - if not, we encourage you to host one! We are a small grassroots production and rely on community partners to host this amazing content and help it to spread. For all licensing-related questions, see the Licensing section below.
Hosting a Screening & Engagement Event
How do I set up a screening?
A screening can be set up anywhere that other film screenings are held in your community, in accordance with the license purchased. Setting up a screening tends to require the following 3 steps:
To host a good event there are others steps you may also want to address – such as preparing food and beverages; considering a microphone for any public speakers; considering “event roles” for hosting; and of course advertising and getting the word out – however the basic technical requirements for hosting a screening are fairly straightforward, and with a little research and planning anyone can do it!
Note that our Film Package includes a range of tips for planning your screening, available with every film purchase. For your first screening event, our team is also available for a free 15-minute consultation to discuss – email [email protected]
- Finding an appropriate venue / location (in-class; library; community centre; conference room; church; at home; in-theatre, etc.)
- Ensuring the proper equipment (computer; film screen; projector; good speakers; etc.)
- Ensuring sufficient seating for all those you expect to attend! If you are playing the film from our online platform from Mediazilla, you will want to also ensure a good internet connection – if playing from the USB then this should not be a concern.

Great question! While we encourage and empower communities to host their own events, our team has also partnered with the Canadian non-profit The People’s Climate Foundation to plan and deliver custom events for climate engagement in your community. You can find a list of event planning & facilitation services linked to Beyond Crisis film on PCF’s site at: www.peoplesclimatefoundation.org/event-support
Note that the film’s director, Kai Reimer-Watts, can be booked as a public speaker / facilitator for your event. Kai has years of experience in community engagement within a variety of settings, holds a Master of Climate Change from the University of Waterloo, and is currently a doctoral student in the Community Psychology program at Wilfrid Laurier University (Ontario, Canada). For more information on booking Kai in one of these roles visit: www.beyondcrisisfilm.com/book-a-speaker

Film Access & Delivery
How is my purchase delivered?
The standard purchase of Beyond Crisis is delivered digitally through the host platform for the film Mediazilla. This platform provides users with an immersive menu experience through their online platform, providing access to both the film and related videos (much like you would have through a standard DVD menu). Digital delivery of Beyond Crisis and its accompanying Film Package will be sent to the purchasing email provided shortly after purchase.
All licensees of Beyond Crisis should expect to see an email from Mediazilla following their purchase, with a link to setting up a free account – after which full access is provided. A link will be provided to all licensees as well to download the full Film Package. See “How will I receive digital access?” for more details.
For physical purchases of the Beyond Crisis USB, all USBs will be sent via the shipping process selected at check-out to the address provided, and come with a tracking number for each shipment. Our team will follow up with you via the email provided as soon as your order has been shipped. Please allow up to 2 – 3 business days in addition to the shipping estimate to prepare your order. If this is a rush order, write to us with the word URGENT in the subject line and we will do our best to get it to you quicker.

What is mediazilla?
Our film is hosted on the online multimedia platform Mediazilla (www.mediazilla.com), which has allowed us to create an immersive film menu that links to all of our film content, much like you might experience on a DVD. Mediazilla is simply the host for this content, making it digitally accessible for streaming to all licensees who have purchased the film. Note that this video content is available for streaming only, not for download. To access and play the videos, you will need reliable internet access.
How will I receive digital FILM access through Mediazilla?
Shortly after your purchase is made, you should receive an email from [email protected] with the subject line “beyondcrisis has sent you "BEYOND CRISIS" via MediaZilla”. Open this email and you should then see a green Get Now button that will allow you to set up a free Mediazilla account to access the film. Click this button and you will be taken to Mediazilla’s site to set up your account. Note that setting up an account purely allows you to access the film – it will not add you to any advertising lists from Mediazilla. Once you’ve set up an account, you should then be able to view all Beyond Crisis material directly when logged in from any web browser, simply by visiting www.mediazilla.com and entering your credentials.
Note that access to Mediazilla will be set up for the email address provided on checkout – hence, on checkout be sure to enter the best email that you would like to use for future online access to the film. If setting up the account for group access, for example, you may wish to use a more generic team email and password on set-up rather than your own personal email. If you would like to set up access for multiple people in your organization under different emails we can do this after your purchase is made, however typically we suggest keeping it to one or (maximum) several email accounts for simplicity.
Lastly, note that the email from Mediazilla to set up your account is not instantaneous, but should be received within 1 – 2 days from placing your order. If you have not received this after several days, please email us at: [email protected]

Can I get a physical copy of the film?
Yes! While the standard delivery for every license is digital through our partners at Mediazilla, we have also released Beyond Crisis and its accompanying Film Package on a physical USB. This USB is housed in a sturdy case (much like a DVD case) that can be added to the purchase of any license, and will be delivered to the shipping address provided. At this time there is a maximum of 5 USB purchases per license – to discuss a larger purchase, reach out directly. See “How is my purchase delivered?” for more information.
Note that the physical USB includes the exact same material as is provided through our standard digital delivery, nicely packaged and presented in a physical form that can then be taken to venues and shared around amongst colleagues of the licensing organization. This can be especially useful if the venues where you are going do not have reliable internet access, and you would therefore like a physical copy that does not have to be streamed via the online Mediazilla platform.

Why is the film not available for online rentals on platforms like Netflix?
We have nothing against online rentals, but this system is not always an advantage to either filmmakers or to the goal of making a true impact in our communities. Online rentals can easily undermine the true value of making and sustaining a project of this nature, including the ongoing work required. Usually, online rentals are not well-suited towards community engagement and hosting broader community events, as they are often designed for people to watch at home and legally do not include Public Performance Rights. Lastly, making the film available for rental online would disqualify Beyond Crisis from continuing to be shown in many festivals around the world.
To support our goal of deeply engaging diverse communities around the world while emphasizing the film’s unique value, we have found that a licensing model that allows licensees to play the film via either our host platform with Mediazilla or from a purchased USB is far more appropriate. See “Film Licensing” for more details.

USB Questions
About the USB
We took great care in designing the Beyond Crisis USB, and are proud of the result! Each USB is custom printed with both the title Beyond Crisis, and a “maple key” or seed from a maple tree. We chose this symbol to represent the spread of climate action that this film is helping to support around the world – spreading out much like these seeds spiral and fall from maple trees here in Canada.
In our efforts to find a suitable product that is also environmentally conscious all our USBs have been sourced from FlashBay (www.flashbay.com), a US-based company which provides the option of a customizable Nature USB Flash Drive. The wood in this product is FSC certified, harvested from responsibly managed forests worldwide, and the product itself is certified carbon neutral.
All USBs are 16GB and have been formatted as ex-FAT, the most universal formatting to allow for each USB to work across as many different devices as possible (see this page for more on ex-FAT). This means our USBs are compatible across both Mac and PC computers, and most other computer devices. USBs arrive packaged in a standard case (much like a DVD case) that includes information on the film and Film Package and can be easily stored, along with a handy wrist strap to easily carry and avoid losing them. See a picture of the complete package here.
All USBs come pre-loaded with Beyond Crisis film and related video content, accessed through the play.html file on the USB. This file connects to our Mediazilla menu to play the film via a web browser, but does not require the internet to play. USBs also come pre-loaded with the full Film Package, to use to inform your event planning & community engagement. Lastly, each USB includes a License Terms document that indicates the authorized licensee and terms of use, as indicated during the purchase.
Note that our USBs can ONLY be purchased from our store along with an appropriate film license, to a maximum of 5 USBs per license. For bulk orders above this quantity, please reach out. Since USB content is only 5GB, this leaves nearly 11GB of space for additional content that organizers and instructors can use to add content related to climate action.

How do I use the USB?
Once your USB(s) have been received, you can use it like pretty much any other USB device or hard drive: simply plug it into your computer, and wait for it to show up on your desktop. The name of the USB should appear as “BC FILM”. Double-click on the USB icon to open it, then double-click the play.html file to open up the Beyond Crisis film menu. This file connects to our Mediazilla menu to play the film via a web browser, but does not require the internet to play. Note that you should not delete this file (or any other files) – play.html is required to play the film from the device.
USBs also come pre-loaded with the full Film Package, to use to inform community engagement around your event. Simply open the folder “Getting Started” for suggested planning documents to get started.
Proper removal / avoiding damage: When finished using the USB, be sure to eject it properly from your computer to avoid accidentally damaging any content – if you’re not sure how to do that, ask someone for help. Removing the USB from your computer without ejecting properly will not necessarily damage anything, but its best to be careful by following best practice. Note that if you discover that any of your files are damaged, in many cases our team may be able to replace them. Simply email us at [email protected]

Why USB instead of DVD?
There are a variety of reasons our team decided to release Beyond Crisis on USB instead of in a DVD format. The first is that increasingly, many screening venues, computers and other screening devices are moving away from DVDs, while USBs and smaller devices are becoming increasingly popular. USBs are also able to accommodate a higher-quality video than DVDs can, along with additional documents from our Film Package. Finally, the USB can be used by organizers and instructors to also store additional content related to their audience engagement, with nearly 11GB of additional space to store content.
Does the USB case include a barcode?
Yes! Each USB case includes both standard information on the film and package contents, along with a unique barcode that can be used to include the film in your school or library collection.
What happens to the USB after the licensing period?
Great question! As Beyond Crisis USBs are being shipped around the world, we fully expect licensees to continue to hold onto them following the licensing period. With respect for the licensing period purchased, we would simply ask that the licensee cease all public performances of the film once the period has elapsed – or simply purchase a new license, available at: www.store.beyondcrisisfilm.com/products/film-licensing
Note that digital access to the film will cease following the end of the licensing period.
Note that digital access to the film will cease following the end of the licensing period.
USB pricing & SHIPPING POLICY
USBs are currently each priced at $25 CAD, which is actually just enough to cover the per-unit cost of the USB and accompanying case, and contribute to carbon offsetting each shipment. Shipping costs are additional, and vary based on location. In order to source a more sustainable product the per-unit cost is slightly higher – however note that the shipping cost for multiple USBs will often be very similar, so it can be more cost-effective to order several at once if needed.
Note that all USBs are checked thoroughly prior to shipment, to ensure that all their contents are there and working properly. With that said, if you discover that anything is missing or does not work properly, in most cases we should be able to replace these files by sending them to you digitally to download. Also note that like all devices, USBs have a limited lifespan and can be damaged - while these devices are shipped in a hard case and bubble wrap envelope that should protect them during shipment and for many years to come, once sent we are not responsible as the supplier for any incorrect delivery addresses, or any lost / damaged / missing shipments. Note that while some delivery methods are insured by Canada Post with a tracking number, others are not. When making your purchase, be sure to input the correct delivery address as well as select an appropriate delivery method. It is up to you to provide us with the correct delivery address, and select whether you want an insured shipment.
For more details on shipping options see "Tracking / Insurance" in the Shipping Questions below.

USB PlAYBACK ISSUES
The Beyond Crisis USBs reference a video file of Beyond Crisis that is both high-resolution and has been optimized for seamless playback on most systems. However, given the high-resolution nature of the video file, seamless playback tends to require a device with a USB 3.0 port or greater, not USB 2.0. Older computers or devices that still use USB 2.0 may experience some lag on playback of the film, as the computer is struggling to transfer high-resolution video data from the USB at a high enough speed to play seamlessly on your device. If you experience this, our first suggestion is to simply test the USB again on a newer computer with USB 3.0 ports (or greater), which should fix this issue. If the problem persists, let us know, and/or consider purchasing the Beyond Crisis DVD. Note that this problem is rare and is usually not an issue with the USB itself, but with the quality of the USB port on the device it is being played on. Switching to a newer device nearly always fixes this problem. Be sure to use a device that's been tested to play back the Beyond Crisis USB seamlessly for your screening.
Shipping Questions
Do You Ship Worldwide?
Our standard shipping provider is Canada Post, which ships internationally to more than 192 countries worldwide! So long as you are able to provide an accurate, recognizable shipping address on checkout, we will be able to ship to you. For more information visit: https://www.canadapost.ca/cpc/en/business/shipping/international.page
Do Shipments Come with Tracking / INSURANCE?
Note that obtaining a tracking number and shipping coverage depends entirely on the shipping method that you choose at check-out. For domestic shipments within Canada by Canada Post, all options do include a tracking number, and Xpresspost, Expedited and Priority all include $100 Liability Coverage. For international shipments, a tracking number and $100 Liability Coverage is available with most shipping methods, but NOT with Small Packet Shipping. Be sure to do your research by looking at Canada Post's pages comparing shipping services for domestic shipments here and for international shipments here. If you do choose a method with a tracking number, we will be sure to email you this number along with access to the digital Film Package so you can track its delivery.
What's the Approximate Size and Weight of the Package?
The size of your package will vary depending on number of USBs ordered. For a single USB case in a padded enveloped, the size will be: 19 × 18.5 × 2.5 cm, weight: 0.08 kg
Do you Carbon Offset your Shipments?
Yes! We recognize that shipping physical products has a carbon footprint, and have done our best to reduce and offset this footprint as much as possible by purchasing carbon offsets for our shipments based on distance traveled, included in the price of your purchase. These offsets are provided by Less.ca, a division of the Canadian non-profit Bullfrog Power, derived from international projects meeting the Gold Standard Foundation's sustainable development criteria, as well as the UN's Clean Development Mechanism protocols.
Note that the USBs being shipped are both small, lightweight, and already a carbon neutral product, already reducing the carbon footprint of this product significantly (see “About USBs”). With the additional offsets provided through Less, we are able to ensure that we are shipping these materials for climate action as responsibly as possible. Digital access to the film is also provided to all licensees, and doesn’t need to be shipped at all!

Technical Questions
Does the Film Come with Subtitles? What Languages?
Yes! Beyond Crisis is currently available with English subtitles, which comes with every film delivery. Simply click “Play with Subtitles” on the main menu. Unfortunately, subtitles are not currently available in any other languages. If there is a language you think the film should be translated into, and you are aware of an affordable professional translator available to support this process, you can reach out to us with this suggestion at: [email protected]
Can the film be screened in theatres, and is there a DCP version to do so?
Yes! Beyond Crisis is available for screenings in-theatre, which fits under our “Business & Conference License”. For screenings in-theatre, including festivals, we are able to provide a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) directly to the theatre.

Licensing
How Does Film Licensing Work?
Film licensing is a straightforward and increasingly common way of accessing quality film content: instead of the product being sold, in this case the producer of the film (called the “licensor”) licenses the content out for a set period of time to the customer (called the “licensee”) for use. For clarification, the producer of Beyond Crisis that licenses the film is Toronto PCM Ltd. (for “People’s Climate March”), which was incorporated for the purposes of this production. One of the main benefits of a film license is that unlike a rental, it provides the licensee with the legal Public Performance Rights (PPR) to show the film in a public space to a public audience. To maximize its use between many members of an organization, the licensee is typically the name of the organization that wants to use the film, which is often distinct from the name of the authorized person completing the purchase on their behalf. This then provides access to all members of the organization, within the terms of their license.
Current licenses for Beyond Crisis are designed for smaller-scale organizations (maximum 500 members / employees) as well as schools / universities (no size limit), and limited to the following four categories: K - 12 School & Public Library; Community & Grassroots; College & University; Business & Conference. Most smaller licensing bodies will fall within one of these four categories, described on this page here, and all four licenses include Public Performance Rights (PPR). For larger licensing inquiries that do not fit these categories – for instance school boards and larger national / international organizations – please reach out to discuss the cost and terms of license.
To make the licensing process as straightforward as possible, we ask that you please include the correct name for the licensee while checking out under “Organization name”, which will then be used in the License Terms document sent following your purchase. For more information on license terms see this page here.
Beyond Crisis licensing is tiered in accordance with common standards for other grassroots documentaries, allowing us to cover our costs, invest in future projects and donate to worthy causes within the climate movement – including support for our local non-profit The People’s Climate Foundation. Can I Still Get a License if I am not Part of an Organization?
For enthusiastic individuals not associated with a particular group or organization who would still like to watch and share the film with your communities, it may be possible to either partner with a community group close to you as the official licensee to cover the licensing cost, or – if that isn’t an option – to possibly license the film as an individual. Note that in the majority of cases licensing the film as a group or organization is the most common, as this often allows for the most opportunity for support and engagement around Beyond Crisis, as well as building support for local initiatives (including those supported by your organization). To discuss a request for individual licensing or the potential to partner with a local group to license the film, email: [email protected]
How Long do Licenses Last?
Standard licenses purchased through our site are for a two-year term, after which they can be renewed for an additional two-year period. We recognize that for some licensees, such as school boards or larger organizations, a longer licensing period may be preferable. You can request a quote for a longer license by reaching out to us directly at: [email protected]
How Many Screenings Does a Single License AlloW?
As our intention is to encourage communities to host many diverse and engaging events for climate action, there is currently no limit to the number of screenings that you can host within the licensing period. However, note that all screenings must be hosted by the registered licensee of the film.
What Kind of Events can I Host Alongside a Screening?
As our intention is to encourage communities to host many diverse and engaging events for climate action, there is currently no direct restriction on the kinds of events that licensees can host alongside a screening. Licensees can, for example, decide to host a fundraiser alongside their screening and event, raising money for a particular cause connected to climate action – or simply charge a ticket price for entrance. Various event types are suggested in the Conversations Kit included in your Film Package, within the following reasonable event restrictions / limitations.
Note that all events must be designed to be within the reasonable restrictions of what is legally allowable in your jurisdiction, and within the reasonable restriction of what is not offensive or degrading in any way towards Beyond Crisis film, its producers / distributors, and our efforts towards climate action. Note that the event hosts are fully responsible for the design, content and outcomes of their events – neither Beyond Crisis nor any of our producers / distributors are liable in any way for any events that may be hosted using the film and film package or the results of these events.

Taking Action
I Love the Film's Message and the Issues It's Trying to Tackle! How can I Join the Cause to Help?
We’re so happy to hear that Beyond Crisis has inspired your own journey forwards! Included in your film package is a broad list of resources of groups that are already active and engaged on climate action that you may wish to look into – just check out the section “Resources” in the document “Part 2: Engaging Your Audience,” or visit our page here.
To help spread the film to others, page 7 in this document includes a full page on “Sharing the Film” – we’re grateful for your support! Note that documenting and sharing some reflections from your event with our team is another great way of “giving back” to our ongoing work to spread the message of Beyond Crisis and climate awareness – see “Sharing reflections and content” below to contribute reflections from your event.
Lastly, we have set up an awesome letter-writing campaign to take action, allowing you to send a letter for climate action via email to your local Member of Parliament (MP)! While this is currently set up for Canada only, the letter template can be adapted to other countries as well with some minor research as to your country's climate policies, shortcomings and opportunities for improvement. Every Film Package includes this letter-writing template.

How can we Share the Screening Dates of Our Film Events?
Great question! Our team would love to be informed of any screenings using Beyond Crisis, whether public or private, including whether we are able to add your event to the Screenings page on our site. Simply reach out to us with the basic event details including event date; time; location; who it’s presented by; and a brief 1 – 2 sentence description of your event, including any links to an event page you would like to include. You can email these details to us directly at: [email protected]
For sharing reflections and content, including photos, from your event see the next question below.

How can we Share Reflections and Content From Our Film Event?
Our team would love to receive any powerful reflections and content from your Beyond Crisis screening and engagement events, including group photos, which we can then consider to include in our upcoming newsletters and on our site under the page “Gallery”. Please consider the following suggested guidelines prior to sharing:
Note that if your message followed the basic guidelines above we will do our best to get back to you, however sending us content does not guarantee that it will be shared or guarantee a response. Thank you for your enthusiasm, and for sharing some reflections from your event!
- DO get permission from your audience prior to sharing any photos with recognizable people in them (especially portraits / faces), or prior to sharing any quotes attributed to someone specific. A simple way to do this is to simply let attendees know in the event description itself that you will be documenting / sharing the event, and / or posting signs around the event that clearly indicate “Documentation in Progress”. You can also have a brief sheet for attendees to sign providing permission, though verbal permission may also be sufficient.
- DO let us know what permission we have to use the content you’ve shared. The default platforms that your content may be shared on include: on any of the pages of our website (most commonly under “Gallery” and “News and Responses”), our Beyond Crisis social media platforms, and in our newsletter. Less common is content included in our Film Package: let us know if you’re interested in this content being considered for inclusion in any updates to thi package.
- DO consider including some brief quotes or written reflections from participants at your event, particularly any inspiring comments on the film or the opportunity to engage more deeply on climate action.
- DO consider including inspiring photos and visual documentation from your event, including any symbolic photos of your audience engaging on climate action (for instance, a group photo holding signs promoting action).
- DO let us know who to credit as the author of any of the photos or comments, should they want to be credited – or alternatively, let us know if the author would prefer to remain anonymous.
- DON’T write us a sermon, an essay or a very lengthy reflection. As a small team with very limited time and resources, we simply likely won’t review or respond to overly long or preachy messages.
- DON’T share any content that is clearly in bad taste. As a public film for all audiences, we simply cannot accept or share content that is at all rude or offensive to others.
Note that if your message followed the basic guidelines above we will do our best to get back to you, however sending us content does not guarantee that it will be shared or guarantee a response. Thank you for your enthusiasm, and for sharing some reflections from your event!
