About the Screening License

Why we charge for licenses:

We charge for screening licenses to cover our costs, and the money we make goes to the non-profit The People’s Climate Foundation and is put toward promotion for Beyond Crisis and the making of future projects and services.

Additionally, making Beyond Crisis took a great deal of time and money, and we were the sole financial backers the whole way through. Our production team was incredibly small, and put in an incredible amount of mostly volunteer effort over the course of several years, foregoing paid work to finish this project. We are still a very small team, doing all we can to make sure Beyond Crisis and its message reach the widest possible audience, and in order to keep our doors open we need to have funds coming in.

Why we don’t negotiate on our prices:

We are incredibly grateful for the attention and engagement Beyond Crisis is generating, and for the amazing work being done all over the world to build a movement strong enough to combat the global climate crisis. We also appreciate that people wishing to host a public screening come from a wide variety of financial circumstances, and that for some the cost of a screening license may be prohibitive.

With this in mind, we have done our best to price the licenses fairly, both for people wishing to host a screening and ourselves. While at this point we are not able to negotiate our prices, we hope that those who are not in a position to buy a license themselves can perhaps team up with others in their community to bring a screening of Beyond Crisis to their area.

How to:

Step 1: Buy a license to screen Beyond Crisis

Step 2: Confirm your screening date with your chosen venue

Step 3: Promote your screening to your community and beyond!

License types

Beyond Crisis is currently available for purchase under one of four distinct licenses:
K - 12 School & Public Library;  Community & Grassroots; College & University; Business & Conference. This licensing is tiered in accordance with the common standards for other documentaries within our field, allowing us to cover our costs, invest in future projects and donate to worthy causes within the climate movement.

  • K - 12 School & Public Library: Priced for elementary and high schools, along with school libraries at the elementary and high school level. Larger institutional libraries should purchase the University license.

  • Community & Grassroots: Priced for non-profit organizations and grassroots community groups. *Note that this license is limited to groups with a reach of 500 or fewer members / employees - for larger organizations, reach out.

  • College & University: Priced for colleges, universities and other post-secondary educational institutes.

  • Business & Conference: Priced for businesses, along with government and the public sector, conferences, festivals and events that do not fit within the other three license categories. *Note that this license is limited to businesses / events with a maximum of 500 employees or audience members  - for larger, reach out.

What rights are included in the license?

Once purchased, a Licensee is entitled to screen the documentary film Beyond Crisis for an unlimited number of times over a period of 2 years from the date of purchase. Each license includes Public Performance Rights, meaning that the film screening can be held at any public or private venue, so long as it's hosted by the Licensee (and not a third party).

Within the 2 year period, Licensees retain the right to host these screening events either free of charge, with a ticket price, for fundraisers or otherwise with the intention of raising greater awareness for climate action - however, they cannot sell, copy, upload, distribute, make derivatives of or modify the licensed film, which remains the sole property of the Licensor (
Toronto PCM Ltd.) These details are all outlined in the License Terms, which is forwarded upon purchase of the film. Following 2 years, a license can then be renewed at the discretion of the Licensor for an additional term.

Given the ability to host ticketed screenings or fundraisers using the film, a single licensing fee can be easily recouped by hosting a fundraiser or charging a modest ticket price for your event.
